Opposition Zambians for Empowerment and Development (ZED) Party spokesperson Wesley Miyanda has expressed shock and disappointment over the fire that has swept through City Market.

Mr Miyanda says the suspected burning of the country’s biggest and busiest market is a clear indication of the porous security situation in the country.

He has wondered how the market which is guarded by police officers on a 24 hour basis can be set ablaze by unknown people.

The ZED Party spokesperson has since appealed to Home Affairs Minister Steven Kampyongo to beef up security in public places to prevent the burning of such buildings.

And in a related development, fire has swept through a Charcoal market in Lusaka’s Misisi compound destroying about 250 bags of charcoal.

According to traders, the fire started around 05 hours in the morning and the cause is not yet known but traders suspect foul play.
