RESIDENTS EXPRESS MISGIVINGS OVER MODERNIZATION OF MISISI COMPOUND

BY BOSTON MUVWANGA
Residents of Lusaka’s Misisi and Kuku compounds have continued to express their misgivings on the planned modernization of the two settlement areas by government.
The residents fear that the anticipated modernization of the two communities will leave a number of families homeless as some houses will be demolished to pave way for the construction of a proper road network and other social amenities.
This came to light yesterday during a community meeting that was organised by the local authority at Misisi grounds and was attended by officials from the council and a lecturer from the University of Zambia.
And speaking in an interview with Komboni radio after the meeting, Mr Ackson Ngwenya complained that residents were not given chance to ask questions on the planned modernization of the community during the meeting.
He also charged that government should first compensate families who will be displaced during the exercise before they are asked to leave their current homes.
And speaking at the same meeting, an official from the council disclosed that government will compensate families that will be displaced during the upgrading of the community.
The council official also disclosed that government will engage the University of Zambia during the house numbering project.
