A 17 year old girl in Petauke district of Eastern Province has committed suicide after her family discouraged her from getting married.
Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo says the deceased who has been identified as IVETA MBEWE of Kalando village in Chief Mumbi’s village committed suicide by taking maize preservative pesticide after her family discouraged her from getting married to her 20 year old boyfriend of the same village on the basis that she was too young to get married.
Mrs Katongo explained that the deceased who was not happy with the family decision decided to take her life by swallowing the pesticide.
The incident happened on 1st September 2018 at about 19 hours at her village.
The victim was rushed to Minga Mission Hospital where she later died at about 22 hours.
