PROPOSED BAN ON THE USE PLASTIC BAGS RECEIVED WITH MIXED FEELINGS

Lusaka residents have expressed mixed feelings over the proposed ban on the use of plastic bags in the country.

Speaking in separate interviews with Komboni Radio News, Mastered Njovu says in as much as the ban maybe good for the environment, there is need for the authorities to come up with alternative solutions as this may lead to job cuts for people working for some plastic manufacturing companies.

However, Ray Musonda has welcomed the proposal saying the ban on the use of plastic bags will help prevent the blockages of drainages in the country.

Early this year, Justice Minister Given Lubinda disclosed that government is still working on a draft piece of legislation to ban the utilization of plastic bags in the country.

Mr. Lubinda however said government will not ban the utilization of plastic commodity before consulting the industries dealing in the manufacturing of plastic commodity to establish how ready they are to come up with alternative packaging materials.
