Kitwe Mayor Urges Government to Lift Land Agency Suspension, Citing Illegal Practices

Kitwe Mayor Mpasa Mwaya has appealed to the Local Government and Rural Development to help lobby the ministry of lands to lift the suspension of the land agency for the Kitwe City Council.

The land agency was revoked by then Lands Minister Elijah Muchima, and the suspension remains in effect.

Ms Mwaya expressed concern that the continued suspension is leading to illegal land administration practices.

She noted that many people are going directly to the Ministry of Lands for title deeds, and building without proper oversight.

Speaking during a courtesy call by Local Government and Rural Development permanent secretary Maambo Hamaundu, Ms. Mwaya warned that the situation could worsen, particularly in Forest 8, located in the Itimpi area, where illegal construction may start if the suspension persists.

She urged the government to reconsider the decision, stressing that the reinstatement of the land agency would help restore order in land administration.

In response Mr Hamaundu assured the mayor that he would engage the ministry of lands on the matter.

Various issues ranging from CDF and Cash for Work were discussed during the meeting.
