22 Zambia Army Recruits Clash with Public in CBD, Injuries and Damaged Vehicles Reported

Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana has revealed that a notable number of people have were yesterday injured and two vehicles damaged after 22 Zambia Army Recruits entered the Central Business District after two of them engaged in a fight prior to that with members of the public.

Facts of the matter are that two recruits that were in the CBD got into a brawl with taxi drivers who assaulted the recruits in the process, prompting the recruits to return to the barracks and enlisted their fellow recruits complaining that civilians had assaulted them, a group of 22 recruits then entered the CBD through chibolya compound and started randomly beating which including Kankoyo member of Parliament Heartson Mabeta who is currently admitted.

Mr Kawana further stated that quick action by the District administration led by the District Commissioner and District Commanding Officer of the Zambia Army ensured the recruits get rounded up and taken back to the barracks.

Meanwhile, Zambia Army spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Sydney Mwewa in a statement said that the Army is saddened by the incident assuring that investigations are ongoing and the perpetrators will be dealt with accordingly, further adding that members of the public should desist from provoking army personnel.
