The Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has expressed concern over the recent pollution incident in the Copperbelt, highlighting the need for stricter regulations to prevent such occurrences.
The concern follows a recent announcement by the Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, Collins Nzovu, who confirmed the temporary shutdown of the Kafue raw water pump station in Chililabombwe.
The suspension was instituted as a precautionary measure to facilitate a thorough investigation after unusual turbidity was detected in the river’s raw water.
ZACA Executive Secretary, Juba Sakala tells komboni news that the recurrence of pollution despite previous incidents underscores the importance of reviewing the legal framework to deter offenders.
Mr. Sakala says the current penalties for pollution offenses are insufficient, and the government should reform the legal framework to increase punishments for offenders.
He also stressed the need to strengthen the Zambia Environmental Management Agency’s (ZEMA) infrastructure and operational capacity to address pollution challenges effectively.
He noted that, stricter enforcement, particularly in the mining industry, is crucial to prevent negligence in disposing of chemical equipment.
