Kitwe Farmers Struggle with Land Shortage, Low Yields, and Poor Storage

Kitwe District Agriculture Show Secretary, Rita Hamilimu says farmers in the district face several challenges that hinder their progress, pointing out to Limited land for agricultural expansion.

Speaking during the Kitwe District Agriculture Show Held under the theme “Adapting to Climate Change”, Ms. Hamilimo says this is a major issue, especially for young farmers, as urban development encroaches on farming areas.

She says there is a need for policies that protect and allocate more land for agriculture implemented.

She notes that low agricultural productivity is another challenge, despite access to inputs, due to factors such as poor soil quality, limited extension services, and inadequate irrigation infrastructure. Investments in training, research, and organization are necessary to enhance productivity and ensure food security.

Ms. Hamilimo also adds that the lack of storage facilities affects farmers in the district.
