Kitwe Man Nabbed for Damaging K5 Coin, Sparking Currency Misinformation

The Zambia Police Service has apprehended a 27-year-old man, Michael Tembo, in connection with a case of malicious damage to property involving the defacing and damaging of currency.

Tembo, a resident of Chimwemwe, kitwe district has been warned and cautioned for the offense.

According to Police Public Relations Officer Rae Hamoonga, the suspect allegedly damaged a newly issued K5 coin by dividing its two layers and recorded a video of the act, uttering remarks suggesting the coins were fake.

Mr. Hamoonga revealed that, the video was posted on Facebook, potentially inciting public distrust in the national currency and threatening financial stability.

He says Tembo has been detained at Kitwe Central Police Station, and investigations are ongoing to identify other individuals who may have been involved.

He since reminded the public that damaging or defacing legal tender is a serious offense punishable by law and urges citizens to handle currency with respect.
