MQHZ Calls for Community Based Approach to Prevent Suicide

Medical for Quality Healthcare in Zambia (MQHZ) has reiterated the need for a community-based approach to prevent suicides in Zambia.

This call to action comes as the country grapples with a significant increase in suicide cases.

Speaking to Komboni News, MQHZ Director General Dr. Quince Mwabu, emphasized the need for a multifaceted approach involving collaboration with local communities, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders, which he says is critical in preventing suicides.

Dr. Mwabu says a community-based approach that incorporates advocacy, awareness campaigns, support services, collaboration, research, and data collection is essential in preventing suicides cases.

He has also advocated for policy reforms, including the decriminalization of suicide attempts and the effective implementation and enforcement of the Mental Health Act No. 6 of 2019.

The MQHZ Director General has since urgef Non-Governmental Organizations, Civil Society Organizations, and community groups to join forces in advocating for a community-based approach to suicide prevention.
