The Occupational Health and Safety Institute (OHSI) has expressed concern over the increasing use of fake medical fitness certificates, particularly in the mining sector.
Speaking in Kitwe, to highlight the achievements and future plans, Director Dr. Martha Chakulimba described the issue as a major challenge affecting the institution’s operations.
Dr. Chakulimba warned that such fraudulent practices not only undermine workplace safety but also endanger the lives of employees and their colleagues, especially when unfit individuals perform high-risk tasks.
And in a bid to address the problem, Dr Chakulimba said the institute has introduced redesigned certificates featuring enhanced security measures to prevent forgery.
Dr. Chakulimba urged employers to verify the authenticity of medical fitness certificates with the institute and issued a strong warning to those involved in the illegal practice.
The director emphasized the institute’s commitment to safeguarding workplace health and safety standards while protecting employers from potential legal repercussions
