Drought Forces Kabesha Traders to Sell Under-Weight Animals

Traders at Lusaka’s Kabesha livestock market say they are selling their animals at cheaper prices as a result of them losing weight owing to the drought situation.

Kabesha livestock market Secretary Oscar Bubala told Komboni radio news in an exclusive interview that most animals being ferried to the market are not weighing up to the required weight as most grazing lands across the country succumbed to the drought.

Mr. Bubala explained that livestock traders are currently left with no option but to sell their underweight animals at cheaper prices despite making a loss.

He highlighted that the Kabesha market is a well-known source of quality livestock products but was quick to mention that the current situation is not favorable.

Mr. Bubala has however expressed optimism that business at the market will soon normalize as heavy downpours needed for greener pastures are expected in most parts of the country.

He has since urged the livestock traders not to lose hope as the situation will return to normalcy.
