Quincy Mwabu, the Director General of Medical for Quality Healthcare in Zambia (MQHZ), has highlighted the urgent need to recruit sign language interpreters in healthcare facilities to ensure that the deaf community in Zambia has equal access to quality healthcare.
In an interview with Komboni News, Dr. Mwabu pointed out the tragic recent loss of a deaf patient due to misdiagnosis caused by communication barriers, which emphasizes the importance of addressing this issue.
He stresses that the timely recruitment and training of sign language interpreters can help prevent such incidents in the future.
Therefore, he has advised the government to prioritize the recruitment and training of sign language interpreters in hospitals at all levels.
