Kitwe Teaching Eye Hospital to Undergo Expansion

The Copperbelt Provincial Health Office Charles Mwinuna has announced a significant expansion project for the Kitwe Teaching Eye Hospital (KTEH), which will enhance eye health services for the growing population.

Funded by Christian Blind Mission (CBM) with a budget of 800,000 euros, the project will include expansions to the pediatric eye clinic, outpatient department, surgical theatre, patient wards, and bulk storage facilities.

Dr Mwinuna added that CBM, in partnership with Orbis, is funding international training for an ophthalmologist at Kitwe Teaching Eye Hospital to become a vitreoretinal surgeon, with an investment of 40,000 euros.

He explained that this initiative will improve surgical retina services, particularly for diabetic retinopathy, which is a growing concern for diabetic patients.

Dr Mwinuna further added that the hospital is also strengthening its research capabilities to boost the quality of inclusive eye care services, acknowledging the vital role eye health plays in daily life.
