The Support for Environmental Sustainability-SFES, a non-governmental organization based in Luanshya has raised concerns about the indiscriminate disposal of garbage in many residential areas of the district, particularly in the townships.
SFES board member, Kerry Kamboyi highlighted the lack of effort by the local authorities to implement effective waste management solutions.
He expressed concern that the absence of these measures continues to perpetuate the issue.
In response via a phone interview, Luanshya Municipal Council Public Relations Manager Gideon Thole stated that the local authority is only responsible to collect garbage in Council-run markets and bus stations, stating that residents are responsible for their garbage by subscribing to private collection companies.
Mr Thole further expressed displeasure at the sentiments by SFES revealing that despite not being responsible for garbage collection in residential areas, the local authority uses its machinery especially in Mpatamatu township where indiscriminate disposal of waste is rife, urging the concerned stakeholders to approach the local authority to collectively provide solutions.
