Small-Scale Miners Urge Government Action as Mine Accident Claims Five Lives in Kitwe

The Small-Scale Miners Association of Zambia have called upon the government to give priority towards the safety of small-scale miners in order to avoid mine accidents.

Speaking in an interview with Komboni Radio News in Kitwe, Association Acting President Kelvin Tembo noted the need for dumpsites in the country to be assessed and ensure that they are safe for the people to operate on, unlike the situation were those in authority opts to allow operations to take place with intent to excite the people.

Mr. Tembo has further lamented that failure to give priority to safety measures is the reason why mine accident has become rampant in the country involving the young people describing the situation as disheartening.

On Saturday, September, 21, 2024, FIVE suspected illegal miners died on the spot after being trapped at Green Mountain TD52 mine in Kitwe district on the Copperbelt province, while 2 were retrieved alive and rushed to Kalulushi General hospital where they were receiving medical attention.
