Kitwe central police station yesterday received a report in which a 57 year old females identified as Melody Kabwe of Kaloko farming block in Kitwe district committed suicide by means of pouring diesel on herself and later set herself ablaze.
Copperbelt Province Police Commissioner Peacewell Mweemba in a statement said the incident occurred between 04.00hrs and 11.00hrs at an unmarked farm in which Melody Kabwe sustained severe burns on her body and later died.
Brief facts of the case are that, the deceased stayed with her son by the names of Davis Muchenje in a small medium built house at the same farm.
On 5th September, 2024 at around 04.30 hours, the son woke up after hearing the door open, prompting him to check for his mother and noticed she had gone outside where he went and fetched her as she was mentally challenged and brought her back inside.
Mr Mweemba added that the son went back to sleep and only woke up at around 05.00 hours and found the door open and his mother had gone outside making him leave the house again to check on her but did not notice her immediately rather noticed a container in which they had stored some diesel for the hummer mill was empty.
The went then behind the house and found his mother lying side wards lifeless with burns on her body. he informed the family and the matter was reported to the police at 14.30 hours.
Police in company of the reporter visited the scene which is about 34 kilometers from the Central Business District on the eastern side Kamfinsa area, at the scene was a body of an adult female lying sideward with no clothes on.
The body was physically inspected and the police noticed some injuries suspected to be skin burns all over her body. the body was then picked and taken to kitwe teaching hospital mortuary.
Investigations on the matter are still going on.
