ZANAMACA URGES MARKETEERS NOT TO PAY LEVIES TO POLITICAL CADRES

BY MONDE PHIRI
The Zambia National Marketeers Credit Association (ZANAMACA) has urged Marketeers to desist from paying levies to political cadres.
ZANAMACA president Mupila Kameya says traders operating from various markets need to understand that market levies are supposed to be collected by the councils as required by the law.
Mr. Kameya has charged that continued practice of paying levies to political cadres has denied the local authorities resources needed to invest back in market infrastructures and improved service delivery.
Mr. Kameya has told komboni radio news that there is also need for the councils to convene stakeholders meetings aimed at addressing issues surrounding the running of markets.
Some market traders have continued to complain of intimidation from suspected political cadres who are demanding for levies from them.
This is despite the recent directive from President Edgar Lungu that the running of bus stations and markets should be left for the local authorities as required by law.
