RESIDENTS WELCOME SPLITTING OF COUNCILS INTO MUNICIPALITIES

BY NELLY BOTA AND KALALUKA MUSHAUKWA

Some Lusaka residents have welcomed government’s plan to split councils into municipalities in order to improve service delivery.

Speaking in separate interviews with Komboni Radio News today, Esther Kapande a resident of Matero Township, notes that the introduction of municipalities in various constituencies will improve service delivery by the local authority.

She also stated that the introduction of municipalities will also decentralize the operations of the council as people will be able to plan and identify social services that need urgent attention in their localities.

And Gift Kanyanta, a resident of Kamwala Township also observed that the population of Lusaka has grown big making it difficult for the council to efficiently provide social services to residents; hence the decision to introduce municipalities will help address these challenges.

Local Government Minister Vincent Mwale on Sunday said that the population of Lusaka has gone beyond the council’s capacity to deliver quality services to the people, prompting his ministry to come up with a plan to segment it into municipalities.

Mr Mwale disclosed that effective January 1, 2018; the Lusaka, Ndola and Kitwe councils will be split into municipalities so that their service delivery could improve.
