POLICE DISCHARGE TEAR SMOKE TO DISPERSE UNRULY TRADERS

Police today discharged tear smoke to disperse unruly people who had staged a protest in Mutandabantu area of Lusaka’s Kanyama Compound by blocking roads with stones and burning tyres and planks.

Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo says the protesters are people who were trading along the road in Mutandabantu and were moved to a new trading area at Kambuma Market to pave way for the expansion of the road but they are resisting to move.
Mrs Katongo has also disclosed that two people have since been apprehended and are in Police custody.

She has since warned all those that would want to ignore the provisions of the law that they will not be spared.

The police spokesperson has since advised the aggrieved part to channel their grievances to relevant authorities such as their local leadership rather than getting to the streets to cause confusion.

Last week on Wednesday, the traders took to the streets again to protest after their makeshift stalls were demolished following their continued resistance to move from the road in order to pave way for the expansion of the road.
