PARENTS URGED TO TAKE THEIR CHILDREN FOR POLIO VACCINE

The Human Rights Commission has appealed to parents and guardians to take their children to Health Centres for polio vaccination during the child health week to prevent disability.

Commission spokesperson Mweelwa Muleya says it is important to have children vaccinated against polio in order to protect them against disability caused by polio.

Mr Muleya says Polio has been scientifically proven to be one of the major causes of physical disability worldwide and Zambia is not an exception.

He says the Human Rights Commission is implementing activities aimed at promoting and protecting the rights of persons with disabilities and has learnt through stakeholders engagement countrywide that most of disabilities were caused by preventable diseases such as polio.

Mr Muleya stressed that it is the responsibility of the Government through the Ministry of Health to provide services and interventions aimed at preventing disabilities and mitigating its adverse impact.
He reiterated that Vaccination against polio is one of such interventions which parents and guardians should take advantage of by taking their children for vaccination during the Child Health Week.
