NINE SUSPECTS NABBED IN CONNECTION WITH THE PRODUCTION OF COUNTERFEIT WHITE SPOON SUGAR

Police in Lusaka have picked up nine suspects comprising Burundese, Congolese and Zambian nationals in connection with the counterfeit White Spoon Sugar worth over hundred and twenty six thousand Kwacha.

Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo says this follows a complaint the Zambia Police Service Intellectual Property Unit received from Zambia Sugar Plc, the legitimate holders of White Spoon Sugar that their product was being counterfeited.

Mrs Katongo says the police on Monday 4th June, 2018 conducted an operation in Lusaka’s Zanimuone west and City Market where the arrests were made.
She says during the operation, officers raided a house in Zanimuone West and a number of Wholesales at City market where they found 1kg, 2kg empty packs and 378 x 50Kg empty sacks labeled white spoon sugar for Zambia Sugar Plc which were being used to package raw sugar and Hullet sun sweet sugar which is believed to have been imported from other countries and was being repacked in Zambia sugar packages.
Mrs Katongo also disclosed that officers seized some weighing scales, ink pads, a date stamp, stitching machines and cotton among other items all suspected to be used in the production of counterfeit sugar.

The Police spokesperson says those picked up are yet to be charged adding that investigations in the matter have continued.
