MUZ OPPOSSES THE DECISION BY MOPANI COPPERMINES TO LAY OFF 4700 WORKERS

The Mine workers Union of Zambia has called on government to engage Mopani Copper Mines over its plans to lay-off about 4700 workers.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka this morning, MUZ President Chishimba Nkole says the move to cut jobs by the mining company is intended to intimidate and blackmail the affected stakeholders.

Mr. Nkole charged that it would be unfair for the over 4000 workers to lose their jobs barely 2 years after about 4300 workers were declared redundant.

The MUZ President has since urged Copperbelt Energy Corporation and Mopani to resolve the impasse in the interest of the workers.

ABOUT 4,700 miners are on the verge of losing their jobs from Mopani Mine on the Copperbelt, because it is closing some sections of the mine.

This comes in the wake of Mopani refusing to pay more for power which is supplied by the Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC).
