MAZABUKA RESIDENTS SET ABLAZE AN OFFICE FOR ZNS OFFICERS IN PROTEST OVER THE DEATH OF A 29 YEAR OLD MAN

Residents of Mazabuka’s Kaleya area last night ran amok and set ablaze an office used by ZNS officers guarding the Food Reserve Agency Storage Shed in protest over a person who was discovered dead.

Southern Province Commissioner of Police Bonny Kapeso who confirmed the development explained that deceased who has been identified as Leo Nyambe Nyambe aged 29 of Chibolya Compound in Kaleya area was last night fighting with his sister hence ZNS officers went to separate the fight.

Mr Kapeso says the soldiers picked the deceased who is also a suspected mental patient and kept him for a while and later allegedly released him but was found dead by relatives who were trying to make a follow up.

He said the deceased was found dead near a ZESCO transformer located in Kaleya area next to the FRA storage shed being guarded by ZNS officers and is believed to have been electrocuted.

The Southern Province Police chief said relatives and residents suspected that the deceased was killed by ZNS officers and decided to set ablaze an office used by the officers in protest adding that two fire arms namely one AK 47 and a LMG rifle without ammunition were burnt in the inferno.

Mr Kapeso says the situation has however returned to normal and police have kept vigil.

The body of the deceased has been deposited in Mazabuka Mortuary awaiting postmortem and burial.
