LUSAKA RESIDENTS OPPOSE 15 PERCENT WATER TARIFF INCREASE

Lusaka residents have opposed the 15 percent water tariff increment by the Lusaka water and Sewerage Company.

The water utility firm will this month increase water tariffs following the approval by the National Water and Sanitation Council (NWASCO).

Speaking in random interviews with Komboni Radio News, the residents mostly from Matero and Garden Compound complained that it is unfair that water tariffs will be increased when many houses are still grappling with erratic water supply.

The residents charged that NWASCO should have waited first for the Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company to improve water supply before approving the 15 percent tariff increment.

The residents have since asked NWASCO to reconsider its decision as currently people are paying for water which they don’t regularly use.

On Monday, Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company Marketing and Public Relations Manager Patson Phiri announced that the water utility firm will this month increase water tariffs by 15 percent.

In a statement, Mr Phiri said that the tariffs were instigated upon meeting the prescribed conditions and that the adjustments were approved by NWASCO in 2016 for implementation in 2017 by 20 percent, 2018 by 15 percent and 2019 by 9 percent.
