LOSS OF EIGHT LIVES OVER FOOD DESCRIBED AS UNFORTUNATE

BY SYLVESTER KAUMBA

Zambians for Empowerment and Development-ZED party has regretted the loss of eight lives in a stampede that happened at OYDC in Lusaka yesterday.

And ZED spokesperson Wesley Miyanda has charged that what transpired yesterday where people died as they scrambled for food is a clear indication of what is happening throughout the country.

In an interview with Komboni Radio News, Mr Miyanda says the tragedy that happened at OYDC could have been avoided if government had made the price of mealie meal affordable for all citizens.

The ZED spokesperson has since implored government to put in measures that will result in the reduction of mealie meal to avoid such occurrences where people would die for a 12 KG bag of mealie meal which he said cannot even last for a week.

A stampede over food yesterday left eight people dead while 28 others were seriously injured.

The stampede was caused after thousands of Lusaka residents trooped to OYDC where the Church of Christ was scheduled to give food hampers to about 35, 000 people.
