GARDEN RESIDENTS JUSTIFY SINKING OF SHALLOW WELLS

Residents of Lusaka’s Garden compound have started to sink shallow wells that were recently buried by the local authority following the outbreak of Cholera that had claimed over 50 lives in the country.

And the residents have justified the sinking of shallow wells stating that they cannot continue to pay for water at the local water kiosk.

The residents have charged that they have been using water from shallow wells for many years now and wondered why authorities should stop them now.

Speaking on behalf of the affected residents, Ms Patricia Zulu lamented that most residents in the community are poor and cannot afford to pay for water on a daily basis for domestic use.

The Lusaka City Council has expressed concern with reports that some residents have started sinking boreholes that were recently buried following the cholera outbreak.

However some residents in the communities visited by Komboni Radio have disputed the scientific evidence that most of the Cholera cases could have come as a result of using contaminated water from shallow wells.
