FRA MAIZE PURCHASE PRICE A MOCKERY-CHIBOMBO FARMER

BY MONDE PHIRI

Some small scale farmers of Chieftainess Mungule’s Village in Chibombo district have described the recently announced Maize floor price for the 2017 marketing season as a mockery.

In an interview with Komboni Radio News, the farmers charged that the price announced by the Food Reserve Agency does not match the cost of production incurred during the 2016-2017 farming season.

The farmers told Komboni radio that the 2016/2017 Farming season was the most challenging as the prices of farming inputs such as fertilizer went up.

One of the farmers, Maliki Choonya stressed that farmers also incurred extra costs as they had to buy chemicals following the outbreak of army worms.

Mr. Choonya has since urged government to revert the floor price to 85 kwacha to allow farmers benefit from their hard work.

The Food Reserve Agency on Tuesday announced that it will buy a 50 Kilogram bag of white maize at 60 Kwacha under the 2017 crop Marketing exercise.
