DMI ST EUGENE UNIVERSITY STUDENT ARRESTED FOR DEFAMATION OF THE PRESIDENT

Police in Lusaka have arrested a 35 year old Student of DMI St Eugene University in connection with the publication of defamatory statements on his Facebook page.

Police spokesperson Esther Katongo who has confirmed the arrest to Komboni Radio News has identified the suspect who is a student in the School of Engineering at the said school as Edward Makayi.

Mrs Katongo explained that the defamatory remarks which were authored and posted between April 2017 and July, 2017 were targeted at the Republican President Edgar Lungu, Home Affairs Minister Steven Kampyongo, Minister of Agriculture Dora Siliya and Inspector General of Police, Kakoma Kanganja.

She disclosed that others who were allegedly defamed in the said Facebook page created in the name Royson Edwards M. are Deputy PF Secretary General  Mumbi Phiri and Presidential Press aid Amos Chanda.

Mrs Katongo says the suspect is scheduled to appear in Court on Thursday, 27th July for the offence of Defamation of the President which is contrary to Section 59 of Cap 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

The Police spokesperson however said the suspect is yet to be slapped with other charges for defaming and use of insulting language against Senior Government officials and other persons.
