CHIBOMBO DC CASTIGATES THE COUNCIL OVER DIRTY MARKETS

Chibombo District Commissioner Barnabas Musopelo has castigated the district council over some markets in the district which have continued to operate under deplorable sanitary conditions.

Mr Musopelo says it is unfortunate to note that some markets in the district are still operating with inadequate toilets and other sanitary facilities while the council has not taken any appropriate action.

The DC made the remarks during the District Stakeholders Meeting on Cholera Prevention and Control which was held in the district administration conference hall.

Mr Musopelo cited Situmbeko trading area off Lusaka – Mumbwa road, as one of the markets operating with inadequate toilet facilities, at the time when improved sanitation at the trading places remains critical in the fight against cholera.

He said in addition to the observed poor sanitation at the market, some traders have also continued to sell already prepared foodstuffs near the main road and inside the market without properly securing them.

He has since directed the council to inspect all the markets in the district reported to be operating with poor sanitation and take appropriate measures.

Mr Musopelo wondered why the council should always wait for the directives to reinforce good sanitation and hygiene in the trading places when it is one of its responsibilities.
