CABINET APPROVES IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NATIONAL ALCOHOL POLICY

Government is concerned that a survey conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) has shown that Zambian women are the biggest consumers of alcohol in the world with evidence suggesting that 42% of the female folk drink excessively.

Information and Broadcasting Services Minister Dora Siliya says this poses a very big challenge to government in its efforts to fight alcoholism and prevent alcohol-related harms in children.

Ms. Siliya who is also Chief government spokesperson has disclosed that cabinet has since approved the implementation of the National Alcohol policy.

The minister was speaking during a press briefing held in Lusaka today.

Meanwhile, Ms. Siliya has also disclosed that cabinet has approved that the National Heritage Conservation Commission takes over the ownership of all significant Heritage Sites that are in private hands.

Ms. Siliya has explained that the take-over will be done using a well-fortified compulsory acquisition mechanism adding that government will negotiate with individuals in instances where heritage sites are in private hands.

She added that government is concerned that heritage sites are being destroyed due to a number of factors such as properties being in private hands and lack of adherence to the heritage cohesion principles by stakeholders in the development of the tourism sector.
