Residents of Batoka area in Choma district of Southern province last night ran amok and burnt down a police post.

The residents were rioting over the suspected ritual assault that happened around 21 hours yesterday.

The situation got out of control when the named man they took to Batoka Police for being in possession of knives and other dangerous weapons suspected to be used for killings was transferred to Pemba district.

The residents were angered as they thought the police were trying to cover up the matter when the suspect was supposed to be in police custody.

And Batoka Ward Councilor Judge Hambayi was at pains trying to calm the angry residents.

The Civic leader urged residents to desist from vandalizing public property when airing their grievances.

Meanwhile, Southern Province Commissioner of Police Bonny Kapeso who expressed disappointment over the matter charged that the people of Batoka area will never have a police post until residents come back to their senses.

Mr Kapeso says it is unfortunate that residents have resorted to destroying public property including police infrastructure whenever they are aggrieved.

He says Members of the public should understand that the police are there to serve the public and not themselves.
