The number of grade 12 pupils who obtained school certificates has increased from 57 percent in 2015 to 61.9 percent in 2016.
General education minister Dennis Wanchinga has attributed the 4.89 percent improvement in performance to interventions taken by government such as the teacher recruitment among others.
Dr Wanchinga says the total number of pupils that sat for last year’s exams were 1 hundred and 28 thousand 7 hundred and 83 out of which 69 thousand 6 hundred and 63 were boys and 57 thousand 9 hundred and 92 were girls, representing a decrease of 0.2 percent.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka today, Dr Wanchinga also noted that eastern province recorded the highest number of candidates obtaining school certificates followed by Southern province, Northern, Muchinga, Luapula and Lusaka.
He disclosed that North Western and Copperbelt were the list in 8th and 9th positions.
