14 people have died while 15 others sustained serious injuries in a Fatal Road Traffic Accident which occurred last night at about 19:17 hours at Emmanuel area along Solwezi-Chingola road about 60 km east of Solwezi Boma.
Police spokesperson Esther Katongo said the accident happened when a Zhong Tong Bus registration number BCA 8977 belonging to Scorpion Bus Services driven by Katoyo Eddie aged 32 of Kambazhi area of Kalumbila district hit into a stationary freightliner articulated truck which had a breakdown on the road.
Mrs Katongo explained that the accident happened when Eddie Katoyo drove the said bus at an excessive speed and after overtaking several vehicles he lost control of the bus and went to hit into the rear part of the broken down freightliner truck and trailer.
She stated that the driver of the bus was to blame and he is yet to be charged with 14 counts of causing death by dangerous driving.
The accident victims that sustained injuries have been admitted to Solwezi General Hospital and the bodies of the deceased have also been deposited in the same hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
